Who I Am

I grew up in Eldorado, Illinois—a small town in the southern part of the state where the biggest thing you could do was leave. I left.

I spent nearly three decades in the adult entertainment industry, starting as a $7-an-hour retail clerk in Dallas and eventually founding Takedown Piracy, a company that has sent millions of copyright enforcement notices on behalf of content creators around the world.

I didn't plan any of it. I just kept paying attention, kept asking questions, and kept doing the work in front of me.

This site is my attempt to tell that story honestly.

My Story

From Southern Illinois to Las Vegas

I grew up in a trailer in a small Illinois town and spent much of my childhood imagining a bigger world somewhere beyond it. Getting there took me through Dallas, Austin, Los Angeles, an RV, Boston and eventually Las Vegas—and almost none of it happened according to plan.

Career

An Unconventional Career

I entered the adult entertainment industry as a $7-an-hour retail clerk in Dallas. Years later, while living and working out of an RV during the collapse of the DVD business, I started experimenting with copyright enforcement. That experiment eventually became Takedown Piracy.

Running

Why I Run

I wasn't an athlete. Then, in my forties, I stepped on a scale, saw 205.5 pounds and decided something needed to change. Running eventually took me from struggling through two miles to age-group wins and a marathon—and then taught me one of the hardest lessons of my life.

Why I Run

The Long Way Around

I didn't set out to build an anti-piracy company. I was trying to figure out why stores weren't selling DVDs.

I didn't set out to become a runner. I was trying to lose weight.

I didn't set out to spend nearly three decades in adult entertainment. I needed a job.

Some of the most important things in my life started as solutions to much smaller problems. This site is about what happened next.

Other Things I'm Unreasonably Into

I've never been particularly interested in pretending that growing up means giving up the things you love. I'm a lifelong wrestling fan, Star Wars nerd, Fallout player, movie obsessive and sports fan. Some of those things have shaped the way I think about storytelling, business and people more than any business book ever has.

There's More to the Story

Nearly three decades in an unconventional industry have left me with a lot of stories—and a few things I've learned the hard way.
